Responsibilities

The SQL Database Administrator is responsible for maintaining Microsoft SQL Server databases and related systems.  This includes the installation of new SQL Server instances, database consolidation onto existing SQL Server instances, and upgrading outdated SQL Server instances across a geographically dispersed global infrastructure.  This individual participates in technical research and development to enable continuing innovation within the infrastructure.  The DBA is expected to provide support for Masonite’s SQL Servers to include performance monitoring and level I trouble shooting, and will be mentored by the Senior DBA in duties aligned with administering databases and improving processes and procedures as they pertain to database administration.

This individual ensures that the SQL Server infrastructure and related procedures adhere to organizational goals of support of staff, team members and customers.  The candidate who fills this position will be working with other team members, providers, and customers to support new and existing SQL Server solutions. The quality of support for these solutions will impact the business, so decorum and attention to detail are a 'must”.

Essential Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Administer all production aspects of the SQL Server stack
  • Troubleshoot and resolve SQL Server performance issues
  • Assist in migration of legacy instances
  • Provide first line SQL Server Database Administration support
  • Leverage automation to ensure efficiency and maximum uptime
  • Use existing troubleshooting tools to quickly resolve and document the resolution of issues as they arise.
  • Provide support per request from various constituencies
  • Manage the SQL Server patching
  • Work within best practices to administer the SQL Server environment for optimal needs-based performance
  • Ensure that processes and standards are accurately adhered to
  • Collect and report SQL Server performance metrics
  • Advise developers on the most efficient database designs
  • Regularly communicate project progress and technical challenges
  • On-call / Afterhours support as needed
Qualifications

Required Skills and Necessary Experience:

  • 5 years’ production experience installing and administering Microsoft SQL Server (2008 and up)
  • Intermediate knowledge of TSQL
  • Experience applying Service Packs and Hotfixes to SQL Server
  • Experience with the collection and reporting of SQL Server performance metrics
  • Excellent Problem Management skills
  • Strong desire to continually enhance SQL Server skillset
  • On-call troubleshooting experience with at least one production SQL Server for at least one year
  • Experience troubleshooting SQL Server and SQL Agent
  • Experience assisting developers to improve
  • Experience enforcing best practices and standards

Desired Skills:

  • SQL Server 2012 Database Administration in a HA environment (AlwaysOn)
  • Experience supporting Microsoft SQL Server running on VMware
  • Experience using PowerShell to automate administration tasks
  • *Experience supporting old versions of Oracle a plus  

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, MIS or related field of study plus 5 years of experience; or a combination of years of equivalent relevant experience, education and training.
